The Philosophy of JSM

Judaism is a radical idea. It has transformed the moral vision of humanity. Indeed, over half the Earth's people use the Jewish Bible as the foundation for their legal thinking and moral civilization. Justice Louis D. Brandeis believed that, "To be good Americans, we have to be better Jews."

The Jewish people have taken it upon themselves to be the guarantors of that vision. This covenant demands nothing less than the full preservation of the Jewish culture, language, values, literature, and ethical imperatives. And it is a contract that must be fulfilled within the overwhelmingly secular context of contemporary North America.

JSM believes that the full-day Jewish elementary and high school is the most powerful and effective vehicle to ensure the transmission of Judaism's profound legacy in the Diaspora Jewish community.

A good education is one in which the unique gifts of each student are identified and nurtured; it is where children acquire the essential tools for intelligent participation in the international exchange of ideas.

A good, Jewish education provides meaning and purpose for those gifts and tools; and a combination of secular knowledge and Jewish ideals creates competent people with moral vision.

For JSM, the ultimate mission for Jewish schools is an education that transcends the normal meaning of the word. It is a process that fires the Jewish imagination; it creates and shapes fully integrated human beings who offer the world enlightened leadership in all areas of human endeavor, a leadership guided and informed by Jewish values and traditions, melded with the knowledge, skills, and democratic ideals of Western civilization.
